Orthodontic treatment has amazing benefits that can last a lifetime, but it does require an investment of your time and money. It’s no surprise that one of the most common questions we hear is, “how much will braces actually cost me?” Here at Bennett Orthodontics, we have a range of affordable treatment options to choose from, so the answer to that will vary from case to case! We don’t do “cookie cutter” treatment here, preferring instead to create customized plans for each patient. Some of the contributing factors that go into these plans include (but aren’t limited to):

  • the type of orthodontic appliance
  • if the braces are for a child or an adult
  • the orthodontic issues being treated
  • the estimated treatment length
  • if the patient’s insurance covers orthodontics
  • the orthodontist providing treatment
  • the area in which the patient resides and receives treatment

All of these have a part in the total cost of treatment. For example, traditional metal braces are usually the least expensive option, while clear braces or Invisalign aligners may cost slightly more. Similarly, orthodontic treatment for children and teens is often slightly less expensive than treatment for adults, though this will depend entirely on each individual case. This can also be seen in patients who present with complex problems. These may require longer treatment times, which will require more work from the orthodontist and more follow-up appointments in the office.

Other important factors to consider is the particular pricing structure of the chosen orthodontist, which will be based in part on the region in which they reside and practice, and whether a patient’s dental insurance will provide coverage for orthodontic treatment. Let’s take a closer look below at what treatment includes, how much the average cost is, and what payment options are available!

How Much Do Braces Cost?

So what is the average cost for braces?

As we mentioned above, a number of factors go into determining the exact cost of treatment for each patient. For this reason, there’s no “one size fits all” answer for how much orthodontic treatment will cost. That said, we can get a general idea from the average totals! For a child, this can be anywhere from $3-7K, while adult braces or aligners usually run from around $5-8K.

Using dental insurance to cover orthodontic treatment

There are some dental insurance plans that will cover orthodontic treatment, but the coverage rules and policies are often arbitrary and confusing. Fortunately, we have quite a bit of experience in working with insurance companies to help our patients receive the maximum coverage!

Dr. Bennett won’t ever recommend treatment based solely on whether or not it is covered by insurance. Instead, patients are presented with a plan that will best address their unique needs and goals. Once a patient has had a consultation and received a treatment plan, those who have dental insurance should check with their provider to see what they will and will not cover in the way of orthodontic treatment.

We’re happy to help our patients with insurance claims and paperwork. Co-payments or out of pocket expenses are estimated before the treatment process begins. Once treatment is complete and all insurance payments are received, we will reconcile the account. Patients will be responsible for any underpayment at this point.

If insurance will not cover treatment, can the cost be deducted?

If braces are deemed to be medically necessary, the dental health care costs associated with them can sometimes be tax deductible. However, the cost has to exceed a certain amount before any deductions would kick in. Patients should keep track of all expenses associated with braces treatment if they wish to deduct the costs, including co-pays and check-up visits.

Will Medicaid cover the cost of braces?

Treatment costs may be covered by the Medicaid if the patient’s braces are considered to be medically necessary. For those who want to learn more about this possibility, visit http://www.medicaid.gov/. It is important to ask about the percentage of coverage and the lifetime maximum before proceeding with treatment.

How Much Do Braces Cost?

Your Bennett Orthodontics smile is worth the investment

Braces aren’t just for improving the cosmetic appearance of your smile! Your oral health plays an important role in your total body health, too. Misaligned teeth can increase the risk for tooth decay and gum disease, and you may experience pain and soreness in the head and neck, among other things.

Your smile is too important to shop around based only on price! Everyone wants a good deal, but it’s important to choose an orthodontist based on their skill and experience. You’ll be spending a lot of time in the office throughout the treatment process, so take care to choose a practice that’s warm, welcoming, and stress-free!

Our goal is to provide a rewarding orthodontic experience from start to finish. We believe everyone should have access to high-quality orthodontic care, and do our best to ensure that every patient receives exactly that from us.
