Brushing
During orthodontic treatment, brush your teeth at least 3 – 4 times daily to avoid accumulation of food particles in your braces and teeth. Always use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste. Proper brushing should take several minutes.
Flossing
Flossing is a vital part of oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment and should be accomplished at least one time per day. You may use special orthodontic floss or a floss threader to properly clean your teeth and braces.
Regular Check-Ups
It is important to maintain regular appointments with your family dentist. We recommend regular cleanings every six months unless your dentist recommends otherwise. It is ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT that adult patients be evaluated for periodontal problems and carefully monitored during the course of orthodontic treatment by your general dentist.
Foods to Avoid
It is imperative that orthodontic appliances are properly cared for during treatment. Broken brackets can cause unnecessary appointments and will lengthen treatment time. It is strongly encouraged to avoid hard, sticky foods such as: Ice, hard candy, pretzels, popcorn, nuts, taffy, caramel, pizza crust, whole fruits and vegetables. We advise that you cut foods into small, bite-sized pieces before attempting to eat.
